Ft. Sumter

The History of the Fort Sumter flag: The Fort Sumter flag was flying over Fort Sumter in April, 1861 when the Confederate Army fired on the fort starting the American Civil War. The flag contains 33 stars even though Kansas was added as the 34th state in January of 1861. The 34th star was not added until July 4th, 1861. President Lincoln kept the star count on the flag at 34 even though the south succeeded, reducing the amount of states in the union. The original 33 star flag is on display at the Fort Sumter museum.
