The History of the Gonzales Banner: During the Texas war of 1835 for independence from Mexico, an army of Texans took the town of Gonzales from the Mexican Army. The Mexican government left a cannon for self-defense against the Indians. Later the Mexicans sent a message requesting the return of the cannon. The Texans responded by raising this banner.
