The current flag of Argentina was originally
adopted in February of 1812. This tri-band flag features equal
blue, white and blue horizontal bands. The state version of the
flag also features a golden Sun of May in the center of the flag,
which was added a few years later in 1818. Both versions are
officially recognized flags of the nation. The original design was
developed by General Manuel Belgrano during Argentina’s war for
independence. The exact color of blue is not always agreed upon,
but it is specifically a light-blue and is generally interpreted as
a representation of the sky. The Sun of May is a symbol of the
Incan sun god that was originally featured on the first Argentine
coin in 1813.
