The current official flag of Aruba was adopted March 18,
1976. There are several interpretations regarding the meaning of the flag
design and colors. The blue tends to be considered a representation of the sea
that surrounds Aruba. The two yellow horizontal stripes signify Aruba’s freedom
within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and a history of abundance in Aruba’s
industries. There are several explanations for the four pointed red star. The
color may have been chosen to represent the love the residents of Aruba have for
their island, and the star has been explained as symbolic of the island itself,
surrounded by the ocean. Experts also claim the star represents the islands
four main languages, or “greets the people of all four directions of the wind.”
