The current flag of Cambodia was originally
adopted in 1948 and was used until a democracy was initiated in
1970. When the monarchy was re-established in 1993, the flag
was re-adopted, and remains in use today. This flag features
three horizontal bands, alternating blue, a wider band of red,
and blue. Centered on the flag is a white symbol, an
interpretation of the famous temple Angkor Wat. Historically,
blue represents royalty, red is a symbol of the nation and white
for the dominant religion, originally Brahmanism, and now
Buddhism.
