The current flag of the Canary Islands was officially
adopted in April of 1989, however the design dates back to August 16, 1982 when
the Canary Islands first became recognized as an autonomous community. The
tricolor flag of the Canary Islands finds its origins in the blue and white
colors of its own Province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and the blue and yellow
colors of the Province of Las Palmas. It is speculated that this flag was
developed as early as the 1960’s and was even displayed in paper form in 1961.
