Cape Verde’s national flag was recently adopted on
September 22, 1992 after all ties to Guinea-Bissau diminished. Similar to other
flag designs, the blue portion of the flag represents the ocean and sky.
Combined, the red and white horizontal bands across the lower potion of the
flag, symbolize the journey towards the building of the nation. White signifies
the desire for peace, and red is the effort towards achieving it. The circle of
yellow five pointed stars, superimposed across the bands, represents each of the
ten islands and the unity of the nation.
