The current flag of Chile was officially adopted in October
of 1817. The design, modeled after the American flag, was created by Charles
Wood, an American who served as an officer in the Chilean army. The flag
features a blue canton with a single white five pointed star in the center. The
remaining upper portion of the flag is a white band, and the lower half is a
horizontal red band. The color blue represents the sky, and the white star is
considered ‘the guiding star on the path of progress and honor.’ White
represents the snow of the Andes, and red is a symbol of blood shed in the fight
for independence.
