The current flag of Croatia was officially
adopted in December of 1990 when the nation became independent
from Yugoslavia, however their use of the pan-Slavic tricolor
dates back to 1848. The design features three equal horizontal
bands in a red-white-blue pattern, and the coat of arms, added
to the flag when Croatia proclaimed independence, replacing the
red star emblem featured during communist rule. The coat of
arms consists of one primary red and white checkerboard shield,
with a crown of five additional shields. These smaller emblems
represent the five main regions of the country.
