The current flag of Dominica was officially adopted in
November of 1990. This green flag features yellow, black and white stripes
in the form of a cross, centered across the flag, with a red circle
containing a parrot and ten green stars, centered over the cross. Besides
some slight modifications of the parrot and stars over the years, the design
has generally remained consistent, embracing the same symbolism all along.
The color green represents the lush vegetation on the island. The tri-band
cross represents Christianity and the Trinity of God. Yellow stands for
sunshine, black represents the soil and African heritage of the nation and
white represents purity as well as the rivers and waterfalls of the land.
The red disc stands for socialism, and the sisserou parrot, found nowhere
else, is the national bird of Dominica. The ten green stars represent the
ten parishes found on the island.
