The current flag of Egypt was officially
adopted in October of 1984, however the red-white-black
horizontal tri-band dates back to 1953. Previously, the flag
featured two green stars up until 1972 when it was replaced with
the hawk of Quarish. This design was replaced with the current
design which adopted the Eagle of Saladin as the emblem in
1984. The crest features the eagle flanked with a shield
containing a vertical configuration of the flags colors.
Underneath is a scroll with the phrase ‘Arab
Republic of Egypt’ written in Arabic script. There are multiple
understandings as to the meaning of the colors. Some
explanations are based on historical references surrounding the
revolution of 1952, and other experts agree on more traditional
interpretations.
