The current flag of the Faroe Islands was
originally introduced in 1919, however it wasn’t officially
adopted until July of 1948. Created by two Faroese students
living in Copenhagen, this white flag features a red
Scandinavian cross with blue fimbriation. This design, known
as “Merkid,” incorporates the Scandinavian cross with both
Norwegian and Icelandic colors. White also represents a pure
sky and the foam of the sea that breaks against the coasts of
the islands. Red and blue are also considered to be the
traditional colors of the Faroe Islands.
