The current official flag of Germany was
most recently adopted in May of 1949, however it was initially
adopted in 1848. The flag was replaced once around 1867 with a
black-white-red tricolor used until 1919. The current tricolor
was then re-introduced, and in use until Nazi rule in 1933, and
was once again re-instated following their defeat. The current
black-red-yellow tricolor flag features three equal horizontal
bands. The colors originated in the Uniform worn by Lutzow’s
troops during the war of liberation in 1813. These colors, the
same as found in the coat of arms, represent black for the
eagle, red as a symbol of its beak and claws, and yellow
correlates with the shield. The state version of this flag
contains an image of the German coat of arms, centered on the
design.
