The current flag of Ghana was officially adopted in March
of 1957, however, it was altered slightly with a white stripe between 1964
and 1966. The design consists of three equal horizontal bands, in the
pan-African colors. Ghana was the first to adopt these colors from
Ethiopia. Red stands for blood shed in the struggle for independence,
yellow symbolizes the wealth of the land, and green represents forests and
agriculture. Centered in the middle of the flag is a single black five
pointed star. The black star is considered a representation of the
“lodestar of African freedom,” and may have been derived from the flag of
Marcus Garvey’s Black Star Line. The Black Star shipping line operated
between 1919 and 1922, and was created with the intentions of transporting
goods and African Americans “throughout the African global
economy.”
