The current flag of Greece was officially
adopted in March of 1822, however an alternative flag featuring
only a single white cross, was temporarily used on land until
the current flag was re-instated in 1978. The design consists
of nine equal horizontal stripes, alternating blue and white,
with a white cross over a blue field in the canton. The nine
stripes represent the nine syllables of the country’s motto, “Eleutheria
i Thanatos,” “Freedom or Death.” Blue stands for the pure
Greek sky and white is a symbol of purity. The white cross in
the canton is a represents the Christian faith.
