| The current flag of
Greenland, often referred to as Erfalasorput (meaning
'our flag'), or Aappalaaroq ('the red') was officially
adopted in June of 1985. The flag was designed by Thue
Christiansen shortly after Denmark granted home rule to
Greenland. The design features two equal horizontal bands in
white and red. There is also a disc centered towards the hoist
side of the flag. The top half of the disc is red and the
bottom half is white, displaying the color opposite of the field
it is over. Although some interpret this as a representation of
the rising Northern sun, Christiansen himself describes the
symbolism of the flag otherwise. “…the large white part in the
flag symbolizes the ice cap and our fjords are represented by
the red part in the circle. The white part of the circle
symbolizes the ice bergs and the pack ice, and the large red
part in the flag represents the ocean." |
