The current flag of Guatemala was officially adopted in December
of 1997, however the design dates as far back as 1871. This
triband flag features three equal vertical bands, in a
blue-white-blue pattern. The state version of this flag also
includes the Guatemalan coat of arms. The color white stands
for peace and purity and symbolizes the land of the country
surrounded by two blue fields, the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean.
The seal features the quetzal, the national bird and symbol of
liberty, perched on a scroll reading “Libertad 15 De Septiembre
De 1821,” the date that the nation severed ties from Spain. A
