The current flag of Guyana, known as “The
Golden Arrowhead,” was officially adopted in May of 1966. The
main field of the flag is green. A red triangle originating at
the hoist side of the flag rests over a larger yellow triangle,
also originating at the hoist, but extending the full length of
the flag. This was the original design created by Whitney
Smith. After his design was accepted as the new flag, the
English College of Arms added a black fimbriation to the red
triangle, as well as a white fimbriation to the yellow
triangle. Each of the five colors is a symbol to Guyana. Green
represents the extensive forests and vegetation covering the
land, and yellow stands for mineral resources. Red indicates
both ‘zeal and sacrifice’ with a black border symbolizing
perseverance and endurance that will sustain progress in
Guyana. The white border stands for the rivers and other water
resources of the country.
