The current flag of Haiti dates back to
February of 1897, but was most recently re-introduced February
25, 1986. This flag is composed of two equal horizontal bands,
in blue and red. Both the colors and design were derived from
the French Tricolr. The state version of the flag also
features Haiti’s coat of arms centered on the design. The arms
are placed within a white rectangle and feature a palm tree,
with a Phyrgian cap on top. The tree is flanked with flags and
rifles, three of each, on either side. Under this on the green
field are cannons and cannonballs, hatchets, trumpets and other
ornamentation. A white scroll across the bottom reads “L’Union
Fait La Force.” This is the country’s motto meaning, “Union
Makes Strength.”
