The flag of Mexico contains the state coat of arms. The arms depicts an eagle standing on a
cactus with a green snake in its beak. The cactus is on an island in the middle of a lake.
Underneath is a branch of oak and laurel. The state arms is actually an illustration of an
ancient Aztec legend that said that they were to build a city on an island on a lake. They named the
city Tenochitlan, which is today called Mexico City. The background colors are as follows; green is for independence,
white is for religion and red is for the equality of the Spanish, Indian and Mestizo races.
