The current flag of the
Netherlands was officially adopted in 1937, however the general
design dates back to the 1500’s. This tri-band flag features
three equal horizontal stripes in a red-white-blue pattern. The
original colors of this design were orange, white and blue,
based on the colors of William of Orange. It is speculated that
over time the orange color of the flags would fade to red, which
transitioned into creating the flags with a red, rather then
orange stripe. The red, white and blue design was widely
accepted throughout the 1700’s but some dispute remained and it
wasn’t until 1937 that Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands,
officially ordered the national colors be recognized as red,
white and blue. However still, an orange pennant is hoisted
with the national flag on occasions involving the Royal House,
as a symbol of loyalty to the House of Orange. |
