The current flag of Oman
was officially adopted in November of 1995. The design consists
of three equal horizontal bands in a white-red-green pattern,
originating from a single red vertical band, at the hoist. The
canton is charged with the national emblem of Oman, detailed in
white. The emblem features two swords crossed under a sheathed
dagger, linked by an ornate chain-like symbol that has been
interpreted as perhaps a belt, or horse bit. White stands for
peace and prosperity, and red, derived from the flag of the
previous Sultanate of Muscat and Oman, represents battles
against foreign invaders. Green is a symbol of fertility and
the Green Mountains. |
