The current flag of Switzerland was
officially adopted in December of 1889. The design consists of a red square
flag with a bold white cross in the center. Legends surrounding the use of
the symbol date as far back as the 12th century, some further.
Known variations of the modern design, however, date back to military use in
the early 1800’s. The pattern for the current flag was first introduced in
1848, although with different proportions, and was eventually altered to
create the version officially adopted in the late 1800’s and still
recognized today. The Red Cross flag was modeled after the Swiss flag in
honor of Henri Dunant, a Swiss philanthropist, and the founder of the
organization.
