This flag began in the last half of the 13th century as a white flag with the red cross of St. George.
In 1603 King James VI of Scotland became King James I of England he became the first king to unite
England and Scotland under a new flag combining the Cross of St. Andrew, patron Saint of Scotland,
with the cross of St. George, patron Saint of England. This flag was flown by the Royal Navy and was referred
to as the "Union Jack". In 1801 King George III added the Cross of St. Patrick, patron Saint of Ireland
to the flag and the flag has remained the same.
