The official flag of the United Nations
was adopted by the organization on October 20, 1947. This flag features a
white emblem on a blue background. The color blue was chosen not only as a
representation of peace, but as ‘the color of the sky as seen from every
nation on Earth.’ The symbol features a map projection of the earth, (sans
Antarctica) embraced by a set of olive branches. The original form of this
flag was presented at a conference in 1945, but the emblem featured a
slightly different positioning of the earth. Previously North America was
centered on the flag, but the current design features the continents more
evenly proportioned on the grid. The olive branches that surround the
symbol represent global peace, the common goal shared by all member nations. |
