The picture on the state flag is the state coat of arms. The star represents the north star. "Dirigo" means "I Direct", which is what people have used since ancient times as a navigational aid. The seal shows a farmer and a seaman which represents the early settlers of the state. There is also a picture of a moose under a tall pine tree. Maine is nicknamed the pine tree state.
