The red, white and blue are a tribute to the American flag. The state's initials and a star designating it as one of the original thirteen states are on the flag. The date May 20, 1775 refers to the date a group of citizens prepared the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence. The other date, April 12, 1776, is the date the Halifax Resolves was written, authorizing the states delegates at the Continental Congress to sign the Declaration of Independence.
