| New York was named in honor
of the Duke of York when the English took possession of New Amsterdam
in 1664. His badge, the sun, still appears on the state coat of
arms. An American Bald Eagle perches on top a globe believed to
be the new world. The goddess Liberty is on the left holding a
staff with a Liberty Cap on top. At her feet is a royal crown
representing freedom from England. On the right is the goddess
Justice, wearing a blindfold with a sword in her right hand and
scales in her left hand. This signifies equal treatment for everyone
under the law. In the center are ships sailing on the Hudson River. |
