The first official American flag had 13 stars, one for each state in the union. The first states in the union, by ratification, were: Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, Connecticut, Massachusetts Bay, Maryland, South Carolina, New Hampshire, Virginia, New York, North Carolina and Rhode Island. The 13 star flag was adopted in 1795.
